The dreaded error page, with the message &#8220;Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart&#8221; was caused by a single update from Austin, Texas-based CrowdStrike, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/top-news\/articles\/2024-07-19\/factbox-what-is-crowdstrike-the-cybersecurity-firm-behind-a-global-tech-outage\">cybersecurity giant<\/a> with operations in more than 170 countries.<\/p>\n<p>Most (70%) of the $900 million in revenue CrowdStrike earned for the quarter ending in April <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/what-is-crowdstrike-cybersecurity-firm-behind-global-tech-outage-2024-07-19\/\">came from its U.S. customers<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/google-confirms-leak-of-internal-documents-search-algorithm\/474974\">Google<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/amazon-tracking-coffee-badging-workers-in-office-hours\/477256\">Amazon<\/a>, and Microsoft.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"text-post-media\" data-text-post-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@kylie.robison\/post\/C9m5pYtJRoN\" data-text-post-version=\"0\" id=\"ig-tp-C9m5pYtJRoN\" style=\" background:#FFF; border-width: 1px; border-style: solid; border-color: #00000026; border-radius: 16px; max-width:540px; margin: 1px; min-width:270px; padding:0; width:99.375%; width:-webkit-calc(100% - 2px); width:calc(100% - 2px);\"\/>\n<p>CrowdStrike&#8217;s wide reach resulted in &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/07\/19\/latest-live-updates-on-a-major-it-outage-spreading-worldwide.html\">the largest IT outage in history<\/a>,&#8221; according to some cybersecurity <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/troyhunt\/status\/1814198760387596407\">experts<\/a>. The update <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/2024\/07\/19\/global-outage-communications-systems\/74465953007\/\">delayed<\/a> Delta, United, and American Airlines flights, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BrighamWomens\/status\/1814270590141768016\">canceled<\/a> scheduled surgeries at hospitals in Massachusetts and Ohio, disrupted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2024\/jul\/19\/homeland-security-dept-says-it-is-working-with-com\">911 services<\/a>, and impacted other public and private sector operations across the globe.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.entrepreneur.com\/images\/misc\/1721401375_Crowdstrike-GettyImages-1177538352.jpg?width=1000\" style=\"height:667px; width:1000px\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\"\/><\/p>\n<p><i><sup>George Kurtz, CEO of Crowdstrike. Martina Albertazzi\/Bloomberg via Getty Images<\/sup><\/i><\/p>\n<p>CrowdStrike CEO George Kurtz wrote in an <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/George_Kurtz\/status\/1814235001745027317\">X post<\/a> Friday that CrowdStrike has found the cause of the issue and released a fix.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is not a security incident or cyberattack,&#8221; he emphasized, adding that organizations should communicate with CrowdStrike representatives and check the support page.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our team is fully mobilized to ensure the security and stability of CrowdStrike customers,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p>CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted. This is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has been identified, isolated and a fix has been deployed. We\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 George Kurtz (@George_Kurtz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/George_Kurtz\/status\/1814235001745027317?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 19, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowdstrike.com\/blog\/our-statement-on-todays-outage\/\">blog post<\/a>, he said: &#8220;We know that adversaries and bad actors will try to exploit events like this. I encourage everyone to remain vigilant and ensure that you&#8217;re engaging with official CrowdStrike representatives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kurtz also went on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lHGH07iPASw\">TODAY<\/a> and apologized for the disruption, giving more details on what went wrong. He explained that the update CrowdStrike implemented had a software bug in it, which caused problems with the Microsoft Windows operating system.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As systems come back online as they&#8217;re rebooted, they&#8217;re coming up and they&#8217;re working,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Now we are working with each and every customer to make sure that we can bring them back online.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When asked how a single content update could immediately shut down everything from emergency services to credit card payment systems around the globe, with no backup, Kurtz said, &#8220;We have to go back and see what happened here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/leadership\/ive-gone-from-entrepreneur-to-the-corporate-world-and-back\/311035\">I&#8217;ve Gone From Entrepreneur to the Corporate World and Back Again.
