Photo by Michael Reaves\/Getty Images<\/sup><\/i><\/p>\n<p>The U.S. finished tenth on the list, with prizes ranging from $15,000 to $38,000.<\/p>\n<p>Becoming an Olympic athlete takes a six-figure investment with no guaranteed return, salary, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/en-us\/2024\/07\/11749370\/olympian-athlete-salary-expenses\">federal support<\/a> to cover expenses. Rick Hawn, who competed in the 2004 Olympics in judo, said his family felt the financial strain of his Olympic career.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My parents nearly went bankrupt,&#8221; Hawn told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffpost.com\/entry\/cost-of-being-an-olympic-athlete_n_1760687\">The Huffington Post<\/a>. &#8220;They put whatever they could into me and I&#8217;m the oldest of six kids.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Paris Olympics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/economy\/2024\/5\/13\/one-of-the-biggest-hurdles-for-athletes-on-the-olympic-path-money\">costs<\/a> up to $21,700 in fees and membership dues, but the annual income of one in four U.S. Olympians is less than $15,000.
