After the announcement, employees speculated that the mandate was a way to get them to quit without formal layoffs, but Amazon CEO Andy Jassy reassured employees at an all-hands meeting Tuesday that this was not Amazon&#8217;s way of secretly forcing them to quit.<\/p>\n<p>In a leaked transcript seen by Reuters, Jassy states that the move to completely in-person work was to strengthen culture, not cut costs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A number of people I&#8217;ve seen theorized that the reason we were doing this is, it&#8217;s a backdoor layoff, or we made some sort of deal with city or cities,&#8221; said Jassy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/amazon-ceo-denies-full-in-office-mandate-is-backdoor-layoff-2024-11-05\/\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">according to Reuters<\/a>. &#8220;I can tell you both of those are not true. You know, this was not a cost play for us. This is very much about our culture and strengthening our culture.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added later that returning to the office was &#8220;an adjustment&#8221; but said, &#8220;We&#8217;re going to be working through that adjustment together.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.entrepreneur.com\/images\/misc\/1730915515_Andy-Jassy-GettyImages-1235716451.jpg?width=1000\" style=\"height:667px; width:1000px\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\"\/><sup><i>Amazon CEO Andy Jassy. Uncompromising return-to-office policies were sometimes layoffs in disguise, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/execs-wanted-workers-to-quit-over-return-to-office\/477647\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">the study found<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Related: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/amazon-ceo-mandates-employees-return-to-office-5-days-a-week\/479935\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Amazon CEO Mandates Employees Work in the Office 5 Days Per Week Starting January: &#8216;Strengthening Our Culture Remains a Top Priority&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>At Amazon, 91% of 2,500 employees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/corporate-amazon-employees-fuming-online-over-rto-mandate\/480432\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">surveyed in September<\/a> said they were &#8220;dissatisfied&#8221; with the return-to-office policy and 73% indicated they were already thinking about looking for other jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Returning to the office has persisted as a point of contention at Amazon over the past few months. In October, Amazon Web Services CEO Matt Garman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/amazon-web-services-ceo-says-return-to-the-office-or-leave\/481568\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">said in a leaked meeting<\/a> that there were &#8220;other companies around&#8221; for Amazon employees who didn&#8217;t like the return-to-office policy,<\/p>\n<p>523 Amazon employees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/500-amazon-employees-protest-rto-in-leaked-letter-to-aws-ceo\/482203\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">sent a letter<\/a> to Garman last week protesting his remarks. These workers &#8220;have not only personal experience that shows the benefits of remote work, but have seen the extensive data which supports that experience,&#8221; the letter reads.<\/p>\n<p><b>Related:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/are-in-office-employees-more-productive-than-hybrid-study\/482328\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Hybrid Workers Were Put to the Test Against Fully In-Office Employees \u2014 Here&#8217;s Who Came Out On Top<\/a><\/p>\n<p>One data point in support of hybrid work over fully in-person work is a study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-024-07500-2\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">published in the scientific journal <i>Nature<\/i> in June<\/a>.
