Warren Buffett.<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>However, like all successful investors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/living\/billionaires-buffett-gates-and-zuckerberg-are-all-middle\/480688\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Buffett<\/a> had to start somewhere.<\/p>\n<p>In his biography <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Snowball-Warren-Buffett-Business-Life\/dp\/0553384619\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\"><i>The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life<\/i><\/a>, author Alice Schroeder recounts Buffett&#8217;s early fascination with money \u2014 and an important lesson he learned from his first investment.<\/p>\n<p><b>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/leadership\/introvert-warren-buffett-reveals-secret-to-public-speaking\/480836\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Introvert Warren Buffett Was &#8216;Terrified&#8217; of Public Speaking. Here&#8217;s the Secret That Helps Him Address 40,000 People at the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting.<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/finance\/should-warren-buffetts-favorite-stock-be-yours-too\/481474\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Buffett<\/a> got his first taste of entrepreneurship at age six when he started selling packs of chewing gum. &#8220;I would buy packs of gum from my grandfather and go around door to door in the neighborhood selling this stuff,&#8221; Buffett tells Schroeder. &#8220;I used to do that in the evening, largely.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, the young entrepreneur moved on to selling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/cola-cola-ranked-best-company-for-career-growth-full-list\/466746\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Coca-Cola<\/a>, a more profitable venture that earned him a nickel every six bottles. Selling golf balls at the Elmwood Park golf course and peanuts and popcorn at the University of Omaha football games followed.<\/p>\n<p>One day, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/living\/5-things-warren-buffett-does-after-work\/306551\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Buffett<\/a> visited the library and stumbled upon a book called <i>One Thousand Ways to Make $1,000, <\/i>which opened his eyes to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/money-finance\/this-is-why-compound-interest-is-more-valuable-than-ever\/377839\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">power of compound interest<\/a>. Follow Warren Buffett&#8217;s 4 Rules.<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>By the following year, 1942, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/02\/25\/warren-buffett-bought-114point75-in-stock-at-11--what-itd-be-worth-now.html\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">11-year-old Buffett<\/a> had saved $120 to purchase his first stock: Cities Service Preferred. He took his sister Doris on as a partner and purchased three shares for each of them for $114.75.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the market hit a low that June, and Cities Service Preferred plummeted from $38.25 to $27 a share, a fact that Buffett&#8217;s sister &#8220;reminded&#8221; him of every day, Schroeder writes. So, when the stock had recovered enough to net a small profit \u2014 $5 a share \u2014 Buffett sold.<\/p>\n<p>Then, Cities Service Preferred skyrocketed to $202 a share.<\/p>\n<p><b>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/warren-buffett-reveals-what-stock-he-bought-for-billions\/474261\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Warren Buffett Finally Reveals What Mystery Company Got a $6.7 Billion Investment from Berkshire Hathaway<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Buffett tells Schroeder the experience was one of the most important of his life because it taught him three lessons about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/money-finance\/want-to-make-more-lucrative-investments-follow-these-3\/479097\" rel=\"follow noopener\" target=\"_self\">investing<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Don&#8217;t &#8220;overly fixate&#8221; on what you&#8217;ve paid for a stock.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t rush to sell for a small profit.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t invest someone else&#8217;s money unless you know you can succeed.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The lesson has served Buffett, now 94, well over the years.
