{"id":15228,"date":"2025-02-28T22:23:52","date_gmt":"2025-02-28T22:23:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imsfund.com\/?p=15228"},"modified":"2025-02-28T22:23:52","modified_gmt":"2025-02-28T22:23:52","slug":"citigroup-credited-a-customer-81-trillion-instead-of-280","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/imsfund.com\/index.php\/2025\/02\/28\/citigroup-credited-a-customer-81-trillion-instead-of-280\/","title":{"rendered":"Citigroup Credited a Customer $81 Trillion Instead of $280"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Citigroup made the mistake of crediting $81 trillion to a customer&#8217;s account instead of $280, according to a Friday report from the <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/9921925e-5a32-48cc-a3e3-3f77042477d2\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">Financial Times<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The multi-trillion-dollar error occurred in April 2024 and was overlooked by both a payments employee and a second employee assigned to check the transaction before it was approved to be processed. A third employee caught the mistake 90 minutes after the payment was posted, leading Citigroup to reverse the transaction several hours after it had been submitted, per the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>The value of the transaction far exceeds the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldometers.info\/gdp\/gdp-by-country\/\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">gross domestic product<\/a> of every country in the world, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/ycharts.com\/indicators\/us_gdp#:~:text=US%20GDP%20is%20at%20a,5.03%25%20from%20one%20year%20ago.\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">$29.72 trillion<\/a> GDP of the U.S. It also surpasses Citigroup&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/companiesmarketcap.com\/citigroup\/marketcap\/\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">$147 billion<\/a> market capitalization.<\/p>\n<p>No funds left the bank. Citigroup disclosed the &#8220;near miss,&#8221; or the term for a bank processing a wrong amount but recovering the funds, to the U.S. Federal Reserve and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.<\/p>\n<p><b>Related: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/citigroup-sticks-to-hybrid-schedule-for-recruiting-advantage\/486589\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">Citigroup Is Sticking With a Hybrid Work Schedule. It Gives the Bank a Competitive Advantage, According to Its CEO.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A Citigroup spokesperson told <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/citis-fat-finger-blunder-81-trillion-jane-fraser-2025-2\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">Business Insider<\/a><\/i> that the incident was an &#8220;inputting error&#8221; and that there was &#8220;no impact to the bank or our client.&#8221; They also stated that the transaction was so large it could not have been processed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Despite the fact that a payment of this size could not actually have been executed, our detective controls promptly identified the inputting error between two Citi ledger accounts and we reversed the entry,&#8221; a Citigroup spokesperson told <i>BI<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The bank also told the <i>FT<\/i> that it would push to eliminate manual entry and work on automating the inputting process.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.entrepreneur.com\/images\/misc\/1740769838_Jane-Fraser-GettyImages-2184872538.jpg?width=1000\" style=\"height:667px; width:1000px\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\"\/><i><sup>Citigroup CEO Jane Fraser. Photographer: Paul Yeung\/Bloomberg via Getty Images<\/sup><\/i><\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t the first time Citigroup has made a massive inputting error. <i>FT<\/i> reported that 10 near misses of $1 billion or more occurred at Citigroup last year, down from 13 cases in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2020, Citigroup accidentally sent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/feb\/28\/citigroup-credited-client-account-with-81tn-before-error-spotted\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">$900 million<\/a> to the creditors of cosmetics company Revlon instead of a $7.8 million interest payment. It took the bank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankingdive.com\/news\/citi-revlon-creditors-settle-500m-payments-blunder-error\/639101\/\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">two years of legal action<\/a> to recover most of the money. The episode led to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/09\/10\/why-michael-corbat-is-leaving-citigroup-paving-way-for-jane-fraser.html\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">early retirement<\/a> of then-CEO Michael Corbat and a fine of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/07\/business\/citigroup-fine-risk-management.html\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">$400 million<\/a> from U.S. regulators over &#8220;unsafe and unsound banking practices.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Citigroup&#8217;s current CEO, Jane Fraser, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citigroup.com\/global\/news\/press-release\/2020\/citi-ceo-michael-corbat-announces-plans-to-retire-in-february-2021-board-of-directors-selects-jane-fraser-to-succeed-corbat-as-ceo\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">stated<\/a> when she was named to the CEO role in September 2020 that she would work to ensure that employees &#8220;operate in a safe and sound manner&#8221; by investing in infrastructure, risk management, and controls.<\/p>\n<p>Two years later, a Citigroup employee accidentally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-06-02\/citi-s-fat-finger-trade-seen-costing-bank-more-than-50-million?sref=0w5HLLb3\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">added an extra zero<\/a> to a trade, sparking a stock selloff that wiped out about 300 billion euros, or $322 billion, from European stocks. Here&#8217;s Which Roles Were Affected.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>U.S. regulators also fined Citigroup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/us-bank-regulators-fine-citi-136-million-failing-address-longstanding-data-2024-07-10\/\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">$136 million<\/a> last year for not correcting gaps in operations.<\/p>\n<p>Citigroup isn&#8217;t the only major bank that has incurred fines over operations.
