{"id":15988,"date":"2025-05-02T03:23:24","date_gmt":"2025-05-02T03:23:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imsfund.com\/?p=15988"},"modified":"2025-05-02T03:23:24","modified_gmt":"2025-05-02T03:23:24","slug":"starbucks-adding-new-staff-says-machines-alone-wont-cut-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/imsfund.com\/index.php\/2025\/05\/02\/starbucks-adding-new-staff-says-machines-alone-wont-cut-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Starbucks Adding New Staff, Says Machines Alone Won&#8217;t Cut It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Starbucks has found that removing human labor in favor of machines doesn&#8217;t work for the company \u2014 so now the coffee chain is hiring old-fashioned human <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/starbucks-sets-barista-time-goals-to-reduce-waiting\/489235\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">baristas<\/a> at thousands of stores.<\/p>\n<p>Starbucks CEO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/starbucks-names-chipotle-ceo-brian-niccol-chief-executive\/478420\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">Brian Niccol<\/a> stated in a call with investors earlier this week that the company&#8217;s effort to reduce headcount over the past few years and replace humans with machines had backfired: Advanced machinery proved to be an inadequate substitute for human labor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over the last couple of years, we&#8217;ve actually been removing labor from the stores, I think with the hope that equipment could offset the removal of the labor,&#8221; Niccol said on the call, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/apr\/30\/starbucks-says-cutting-shop-staff-in-favour-of-automation-has-failed\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\"><i>The Guardian<\/i><\/a>. &#8220;What we&#8217;re finding is that wasn&#8217;t an accurate assumption with what played out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>By the time Niccol <a href=\"https:\/\/about.starbucks.com\/press\/2024\/starbucks-names-brian-niccol-as-chairman-and-chief-executive-officer\/\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">joined<\/a> Starbucks in September 2024, the company had been testing out human staff increases at just a handful of locations. Starbucks needed to adequately staff stores and allow employees access to new equipment to deliver a better customer experience.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Equipment doesn&#8217;t solve the customer experience that we need to provide, but rather staffing the stores and deploying with this technology behind it does,&#8221; Niccol said on the call.<\/p>\n<p>Niccol noted that increasing staff would entail higher costs but asserted that &#8220;some growth&#8221; for the company would accompany the move.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.entrepreneur.com\/images\/misc\/1746130372_Brian-Niccol-GettyImages-1032227392.jpg?width=1000\" style=\"height:728px; width:1000px\" width=\"1000\" height=\"728\"\/><sup><i>Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol. Photo by Kevin Sullivan\/Digital First Media\/Orange County Register via Getty Images<\/i><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The move to hire new baristas is part of Niccol&#8217;s plan to turn Starbucks around after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/04\/29\/starbucks-sbux-q2-2025-earnings.html\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">five consecutive<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.starbucks.com\/news\/financial-releases\/news-details\/2024\/Starbucks-Reports-Q4-and-Full-Fiscal-Year-2024-Results\/default.aspx\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">quarters<\/a> of declining sales. Starbucks <a href=\"https:\/\/about.starbucks.com\/press\/2025\/starbucks-reports-q2-fiscal-year-2025-earnings-results\/\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">reported<\/a> on Tuesday that same-store sales dropped 1% in the first quarter of 2025, falling short of Wall Street expectations.<\/p>\n<p><b>Related:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/starbucks-reverses-open-door-policy-paying-customers-only\/485529\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">It&#8217;s Pay-to-Stay at Starbucks As the Coffeehouse Reverses Its Open Door Policy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Niccol <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-04-29\/starbucks-says-turnaround-on-track-as-sales-decline-persists\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">reassured<\/a> investors on the call that though the financial results proved &#8220;disappointing,&#8221; Starbucks was &#8220;really showing a lot of signs of progress&#8221; internally. For example, the average time to deliver in-store orders had declined by an average of two minutes during the quarter, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Niccol&#8217;s plan to turn around Starbucks includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/starbucks-cuts-the-number-of-drinks-allowed-in-mobile-orders\/486718\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">limiting the number of items<\/a> customers can order through mobile, adding <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/starbucks-ceramic-mugs-q1-2025-retail-consumers-1851750363\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">ceramic mugs<\/a> for in-store orders, cutting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/starbucks-is-cutting-13-drinks-from-its-menu-next-week-list\/487608\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">30% of the menu<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4731205-starbucks-corporation-sbux-q4-2024-earnings-call-transcript\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">writing customers&#8217; names<\/a> down with Sharpies on their cups, and asking baristas to make orders in <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/starbucks-ceo-brian-niccol-coffee-menu-pare-down-retail-1851690763\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">under four minutes<\/a>. Starting May 12, Starbucks will also require baristas to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/starbucks-introduces-a-strict-new-dress-code-for-baristas\/490077\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">dress uniformly<\/a> in a solid black top and khaki, black, or blue denim bottoms.<\/p>\n<p>Starbucks operates <a href=\"https:\/\/investor.starbucks.com\/news\/financial-releases\/news-details\/2024\/Starbucks-Reports-Q4-and-Full-Fiscal-Year-2024-Results\/default.aspx\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">16,941 stores<\/a> in the U.S. and has <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/starbucks-cuts-us-retail-workforce-121500915.html\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">211,000 U.S. employees<\/a>.
