Buffett&#8217;s successor, Greg Abel, 62, will take the reins on Jan. 1, 2026, though Buffett will continue as chairman of Berkshire&#8217;s board.<\/p>\n<p>Buffett revealed his decision to step down as CEO in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/bill-murphy-jr\/warren-buffett-just-made-the-a-huge-announcement-and-his-careful-timing-was-brilliant\/91184617\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">final five minutes<\/a> of a five-hour question-and-answer session. Now, new details have come to light about why Buffett decided to pass the torch to Abel\u2014and it has to do with his age.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;How do you know the day that you become old?&#8221; Buffett told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/warren-buffett-reveals-he-stepped-down-after-finally-feeling-his-age-b060251f\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\"><i>The Wall Street Journal<\/i><\/a> in an interview on Wednesday. &#8220;I didn&#8217;t really start getting old, for some strange reason, until I was about 90. He had trouble remembering names and found it more difficult to read newspapers, which suddenly looked like they had unclear text.<\/p>\n<p>Buffett was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2013\/05\/31\/us\/warren-buffett-fast-facts\/index.html\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">born in Omaha<\/a> in 1930 and took control of Berkshire Hathaway, then a textile maker, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/finance\/investing\/read-the-wsjs-early-coverage-of-warren-buffett-01b09b9c\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">in 1965<\/a> when he was just 34 years old. He became CEO and chairman of the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/market-data\/quotes\/BRKA\/company-people\/executive-profile\/38060996#:~:text=Warren%20Edward%20Buffett%20currently%20works,1970%2C%20Berkshire%20Hathaway%2C%20Inc.\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">in 1970<\/a> and turns 95 in August.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.entrepreneur.com\/images\/misc\/1747331165_Warren-Buffett-GettyImages-849890542.jpg?width=1000\" style=\"height:685px; width:1000px\" width=\"1000\" height=\"685\"\/><sup><i>Berkshire Hathaway chairman Warren Buffett. Photo by Daniel Zuchnik\/WireImage<\/i><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Buffett told <i>WSJ<\/i> that he never intended to be Berkshire&#8217;s CEO for life and was &#8220;surprised&#8221; at how long his tenure had lasted. He also observed that his days had slowed down, while Abel brought more energy to the table and accomplished more during a workday.<\/p>\n<p><b>Related:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/berkshire-hathaway-meeting-takeaways-warren-buffett-retires\/491113\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">Warren Buffett&#8217;s Successor, Greg Abel, Outlined Berkshire Hathaway&#8217;s Critical Values at the Company&#8217;s Annual Meeting.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The difference in energy level and just how much he [Abel] could accomplish in a 10-hour day compared to what I could accomplish in a 10-hour day \u2014 the difference became more and more dramatic,&#8221; Buffett told <i>WSJ<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Buffett said that Abel was &#8220;so much more effective&#8221; in handling day-to-day operations at Berkshire that &#8220;it was unfair, really,&#8221; not to have him serve as CEO.<\/p>\n<p>Abel joined Berkshire in 1999 after the firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.berkshirehathaway.com\/news\/oct2599.html\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">acquired<\/a> MidAmerican Energy Holdings, an energy company where he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/greg-abel-warren-buffett-ceo-of-berkshire-hathaway-who-is\/\" rel=\"follow\" target=\"_self\">served as an executive<\/a>. Buffett made Abel Berkshire&#8217;s vice chairman of non-insurance operations in 2018.
