In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/artificial-intelligene-ai-data-centers-electricity-bill-energy-costs\/\">CBS reports<\/a> that electricity prices have risen 4.5% in the last year, according to recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/cpi.nr0.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">data<\/a> from the Labor Department.<\/p>\n<p>But what about a higher bill due to AI? But the entire U.S. could soon be affected.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floodlightnews.org\/power-for-data-centers-could-come-at-staggering-cost-to-consumers\/\"><i>Floodlight <\/i>reports<\/a> that the way electric companies currently set rates won&#8217;t work with the unprecedented demand Big Tech has with AI, and highlights a <a href=\"https:\/\/eelp.law.harvard.edu\/extracting-profits-from-the-public-how-utility-ratepayers-are-paying-for-big-techs-power\/?ref=floodlightnews.org\">report<\/a> from Harvard&#8217;s Electricity Law Initiative that said, unless the current system changes, U.S. consumers will be the ones who pay &#8220;billions of dollars&#8221; for it.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Wolfe, executive director of the<b> <\/b>National Energy Assistance Directors Association, told CBS MoneyWatch the same \u2014 that the American taxpayers will be the ones footing the bill \u2014 not the AI companies.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As utilities race to meet skyrocketing demand from AI and cloud computing, they&#8217;re building new infrastructure and raising rates, often without transparency or public input,&#8221; Wolfe said. &#8220;That means higher electricity bills for everyday households, while tech companies benefit from sweetheart deals behind closed doors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><b>Related: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/olympics-pool-partially-heated-by-excess-heat-from-ai-server\/478300\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">Excess Energy from AI Servers Is Heating the Pool at the 2024 Olympic Games \u2014 Here&#8217;s How<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Digital automation company, Schneider Electric, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.se.com\/ww\/en\/insights\/ai-and-technology\/artificial-intelligence\/looming-power-crunch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">found that<\/a> electricity demand will increase at least 16% in the U.S. by 2029 due to data centers. This is only expected to grow as the number of data centers also grows (it already doubled in the U.S. between 2021 and 2024, per a <a href=\"https:\/\/environmentamerica.org\/rhodeisland\/center\/media-center\/release-new-report-details-environmental-consumer-costs-of-data-center-expansion\/#:~:text=The%20report%20shows%20that%20between,projected%20to%20increase%20as%20well.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> from Environment America). And the number is increasing with generative AI and other technological advances.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the rise in electricity needs could result in &#8220;lower system stability,&#8221; according to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nerc.com\/pa\/RAPA\/PA\/Performance%20Analysis%20DL\/NERC_SOR_2025_Overview.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> by the North American Electric Reliability Corp., and a grid operator in 13 states and Washington, D.C., PJM, said data center demand could lead to &#8220;capacity shortages&#8221; in its 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/insidelines.pjm.com\/2025-long-term-load-forecast-report-predicts-significant-increase-in-electricity-demand\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">forecast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"first-letter:float-left first-letter:text-8xl first-letter:pr-1 first-letter:-mt-1 first-letter:font-black first-letter:text-gray-500 prose prose-blue max-w-3xl text-lg leading-relaxed mb-12\">\n<p>Is your electric bill higher than normal?
