Now the chipmaking giant is planning to cut over 33,000 jobs to cut the workforce to 75,000 employees by the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, 65, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.intel.com\/corporate\/lip-bu-tan-steps-in-the-right-direction\">memo to staff<\/a> on Thursday that Intel is implementing a plan to reduce its workforce by 15%.<b> <\/b>The layoffs are in addition to the approximately 21,000 roles (about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/intel-reportedly-plans-to-lay-off-20-of-its-workforce\/490483\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">20% of Intel&#8217;s workforce<\/a>) the company let go from April to June, which mainly focused on cutting down layers of middle management.<\/p>\n<p>Intel previously announced in August that it was laying off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/intel-ceo-says-layoffs-will-affect-15000-tough-day\/477963\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">15% of its workforce<\/a>, or over 15,000 employees, last year.<\/p>\n<p><b>Related:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/intel-mandates-that-employees-work-onsite-four-days-a-week\/490647\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">Intel Requires Employees to Work From the Office More Often: &#8216;This Action Is Necessary&#8217;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In its second-quarter<a href=\"https:\/\/www.intc.com\/news-events\/press-releases\/detail\/1745\/intel-reports-second-quarter-2025-financial-results\"> earnings report<\/a> released on Thursday, Intel reported a sixth consecutive quarterly loss of $2.9 billion, nearly double its $1.6 billion loss at the same time a year earlier. The increased loss was mainly due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/intel-is-cutting-more-jobs-ceo-tan-tries-fix-manufacturing-missteps-2025-07-24\/\">restructuring costs<\/a> of $1.9 billion due to job cuts.<\/p>\n<p>Tan stated in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/pc-components\/cpus\/intel-promises-sweeping-changes-to-combat-stagnation-with-new-foundry-strategy-ai-focus-and-the-return-of-hyper-threading-but-losses-threaten-to-curtail-ambition\">conference call<\/a> with analysts and investors following the report that over the past three months, he had completed &#8220;a systematic review&#8221; of Intel&#8217;s headcount and spending.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our goal is to reduce inefficiencies and redundancies and increase accountability at every level of the company,&#8221; Tan stated on the call. &#8220;We need to right-size and scale back the company.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload\" loading=\"lazy\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.entrepreneur.com\/images\/misc\/1753462235_Lip-Bu-Tan-GettyImages-2215354254.jpg?width=1000\" style=\"height:667px; width:1000px\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\"\/><sup><i>Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan. Photographer: Annabelle Chih\/Bloomberg via Getty Images<\/i><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Tan, who was previously CEO of chip software company Cadence Design Systems <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.intel.com\/corporate\/intel-appoints-lip-bu-tan-chief-executive-officer\">from 2009 to 2021<\/a>, is now tasked with turning Intel around after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macrotrends.net\/stocks\/charts\/INTC\/intel\/revenue\">three years<\/a> of declining revenue. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-03-12\/intel-names-chip-industry-veteran-lip-bu-tan-as-its-next-ceo\">became<\/a> Intel&#8217;s CEO on March 18, replacing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/intel-ceo-pat-gelsinger-retires-reportedly-forced-out\/483739\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">former CEO Pat Gelsinger<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Intel faces competition from rival companies like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/nvidia-ceo-ai-will-change-everyones-jobs-including-my-own\/494599\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">Nvidia<\/a>, which captured a greater share of the AI chip market.
