According to the <i>BI<\/i> report, Microsoft is considering increasing the requirement for in-person work for employees based in its Redmond, Washington, headquarters to at least three days a week starting in January.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft is still working out the details of the plan and intends to announce it in September, the sources said. As of June 30, Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/facts-about-microsoft\/\">employed<\/a> 228,000 workers, with 125,000 located in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>If Microsoft implements a stricter return-to-office policy, it would join a slew of other companies that have tightened the limits on remote work recently \u2014 or eliminated it altogether.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/att-sweetgreen-implement-strict-return-to-office-mandates\/484569\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">AT&amp;T and Sweetgreen<\/a> revised their stances on remote work, with AT&amp;T asking U.S. staff to work all five days from the office while Sweetgreen mandated four days. Both companies previously required staff to work in person three days a week.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Amazon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/amazon-ceo-this-is-why-employees-must-work-in-office-rto\/482473\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">announced<\/a> a sweeping return-to-office mandate in September, requiring employees to work from the office five days a week starting in January instead of adhering to a hybrid schedule. Though the move met with pushback from staff \u2014 and inspired 500 employees <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/500-amazon-employees-protest-rto-in-leaked-letter-to-aws-ceo\/482203\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">to sign a letter<\/a> in protest \u2014 Amazon persisted with the move.<\/p>\n<p><b>Related:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/amazon-tells-employees-to-relocate-to-main-hubs-or-resign\/493594\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">Amazon Tells Thousands of Employees to Relocate or Resign<\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to a study conducted last year by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/execs-wanted-workers-to-quit-over-return-to-office\/477647\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">Bamboo HR<\/a>, return-to-office mandates were often layoffs in disguise, designed to pare down a workforce without conducting official job cuts. About a quarter of C-Suite executives surveyed wanted to inspire &#8220;voluntary turnover&#8221; with stricter return-to-office policies.<\/p>\n<h2>Mass Layoffs Despite Stellar Earnings<\/h2>\n<p>Microsoft recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/microsoft-layoffs-another-9000-employees-cut\/494159\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">conducted mass layoffs<\/a>, eliminating 9,000 roles in July, or nearly 4% of its workforce. Two months earlier, in May, Microsoft laid off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/microsoft-is-laying-off-over-6000-employees-report\/491556\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">over 6,000 employees<\/a>, or 3% of its workforce.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, Microsoft has reported stellar earnings, greater than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/07\/30\/microsoft-market-cap-tops-4-trillion-after-hours-on-earnings-beat.html\">analyst expectations<\/a>.
