However, a new report in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/finance\/investing\/what-we-know-about-americas-billionaires-1-135-and-counting-98d22268?mod=pls_whats_news_us_business_f\"><i>Wall Street Journal<\/i><\/a> suggests that most U.S. billionaires did not amass their wealth in tech. Instead, it&#8217;s the banking and finance fields that have produced most of the country&#8217;s super-rich.<\/p>\n<p>According to data shared with the <i>WSJ<\/i> from wealth intelligence company <a href=\"https:\/\/altrata.com\/\">Altrata<\/a>, there were 1,135 billionaires in the U.S. last year, up from 927 in 2020. Approximately 300 billionaires made their money in banking and finance, while an estimated 110 came from the tech sector. Meanwhile, 75 billionaires earned their money in real estate.<\/p>\n<p>Many, of course, got a head start by inheriting wealth. Here&#8217;s Where She Spends Money.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The data shows that U.S. billionaires are worth $5.7 trillion in total. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/elon-musk-warns-openai-will-eat-microsoft-alive\/495695\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">Musk<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/starting-a-business\/these-3-quotes-from-jeff-bezos-will-change-how-you-run-your\/468800\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">Bezos<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/mark-zuckerberg-tells-joe-rogan-that-masculinity-is-back\/485481\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">Zuckerberg<\/a> alone comprise about $1 trillion, or nearly one-sixth, of that wealth.<\/p>\n<p>Altrata also found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/meet-the-reclusive-billionaires-with-massive-stealth-wealth\/457554\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">billionaires<\/a> tend to live in one state above all others: California. The highest percentage of them, about 255 people, live in the Golden State. However, they have primary businesses in nearly every U.S. state, except for Wyoming and Alaska.<\/p>\n<p>The list of U.S. billionaires includes some recognizable names, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/oracle-cto-larry-ellison-is-now-the-second-richest-person\/494708\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">Oracle founder Larry Ellison<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/google-cofounder-sergey-brin-leaked-memo-60-hour-workweeks\/487837\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">Google co-founder Sergey Brin<\/a>, as well as some more private individuals, like Diane Hendricks, co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abcsupply.com\/about-us\/#:~:text=Home%20%C2%BB%20About%20Us,1%20trusted%20building%20material%20distributor.\">ABC Supply<\/a>, North America&#8217;s biggest distributor of building products.<\/p>\n<p>Hendricks, who is the richest self-made woman with a net worth of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/self-made-women\/\">$22.3 billion<\/a>, is one of 150 female billionaires based in the U.S., joining stars like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/taylor-swift-and-travis-kelce-are-engaged-photos\/496365\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">Taylor Swift<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/selena-gomez-shuts-down-rumors-says-not-selling-rare-beauty\/474988\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">Selena Gomez<\/a>. Among them is Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett, who donated a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.entrepreneur.com\/business-news\/berkshire-hathaway-ceo-warren-buffett-donates-6-billion\/494032\" rel=\"\" target=\"_self\">record $6 billion<\/a> to different foundations in June.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly half of all overall donations from billionaires, $90 billion, went towards two causes: education and medical research. Some of the most popular organizations that received donations were the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.centralparknyc.org\/\">Central Park Conservancy<\/a> in New York City, which received funds collectively worth about $100 million from 89 individuals, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jhu.edu\/\">Johns Hopkins University<\/a>, which received donations from about 30 individuals totaling $7.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p>However, charitable giving isn&#8217;t a priority for all billionaires.
