Pictured, Mount Rushmore National Monument.<\/p>\n<p>Photo by Mike Kline (notkalvin)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Renters across the U.S. are feeling the sting of soaring inflation, rising housing costs and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/08\/30\/evictions-are-still-banned-in-these-states-.html\">end of the national eviction ban<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some 15% of American households, around 6 million, are behind on rent this fall, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/myelisting.com\/commercial-real-estate-news\/1304\/rent-payments-burden-americans-the-most-in-these-cities-and-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent report<\/a> from MyEListing.com, a commercial real estate website.<\/p>\n<p>South Dakota, Alabama and New Jersey renters are struggling the most with payments, the report found, based on an analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data, and Americans ages 40 to 54 are having the most difficulty.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>More from Personal Finance:<\/strong><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/10\/06\/as-more-people-go-cashless-heres-how-much-money-to-keep-in-your-wallet.html\">As consumers go cashless, here&#8217;s how much money to keep in your wallet<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/10\/06\/growing-share-of-car-buyers-pays-1000-or-more-a-month-for-loans.html\">Growing share of car buyers pay$1,000 or more a month for their loans<\/a><br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/10\/06\/the-401k-industry-launches-rollover-plan-for-old-retirement-accounts.html\">401(k) industry now has &#8216;lost and found&#8217; for old retirement accounts<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/09\/20\/single-family-rent-increases-cool-for-the-third-straight-month.html\">signs the market is cooling off<\/a>, families still paid 12.6%\u00a0more for single-family rentals in July compared to the year-earlier month, a recent report from CoreLogic found.<\/p>\n<p>These inflated costs, along with higher day-to-day expenses, have strained many Americans&#8217; budgets, with 20% or more renters behind on payments in some states, according to the MyEListing.com report.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s where renters are facing the biggest difficulties:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>States with the most renters behind on payments<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<ol>\n<li>South Dakota (26%)\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Alabama (25%)<\/li>\n<li>New Jersey (24%)<\/li>\n<li>South Carolina (22%)<\/li>\n<li>Connecticut (21%)<\/li>\n<li>Delaware (20%)<\/li>\n<li>Arkansas (20%)<\/li>\n<li>Kentucky (20%)<\/li>\n<li>Louisiana (20%)<\/li>\n<li>New York (19%)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>Higher rental prices may continue into 2023<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Many markets are seeing rental prices decline, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zumper.com\/blog\/rental-price-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">September rent report<\/a> from Zumper, based on the 100 biggest U.S. cities. More than half of the cities in the report showed month-over-month declines in the median price for one-bedroom rent.<\/p>\n<p>Still, despite those signs of moderation, the national median rent continues to rise.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Surging home costs have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/08\/02\/rent-prices-are-soaring-in-these-5-metros-what-to-know-before-moving-.html\">increased rental prices<\/a>, accounting for a significant portion of inflation since late 2021, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasfed.org\/research\/economics\/2022\/0816\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a report<\/a> from the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107107591\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000259982\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/107107592-16611998551661199851-25038380159-1080pnbcnews.jpg?v=1661199854&amp;w=750&amp;h=422&amp;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"CPI is going to stay high due to high rents, says Trivariate's Adam Parker\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>And rental price growth may continue into 2023, with year-over-year rental inflation expected to jump to 8.4% in May 2023 from 5.8% in June 2022, the report predicts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"\/>How to save as rent prices grow<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>If you&#8217;re eyeing a move to reduce your rent, it&#8217;s critical to &#8220;study up on the local market,&#8221; so you&#8217;re prepared and can negotiate, said Zumper spokesperson Crystal Chen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Winter is the best time to get a deal,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That&#8217;s when demand is at its lowest and landlords want to fill vacancies before the holidays.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You may find reduced rates if you can wait until then, she added, and you can watch for rent specials in the meantime.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote data-test=\"Pullquote\">\n<div class=\"Pullquote-pullquote\" style=\"border-top-color:#002f6c\">\n<div>\n<p>Winter is the best time to get a deal.<\/p>\n<div class=\"Pullquote-sourceWrapper\">\n<p>Crystal Chen<\/p>\n<p>Zumper spokesperson<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;Property managers at newer buildings are usually trying to fill a lot of apartments at once,&#8221; Chen said. &#8220;Some will offer perks like six weeks&#8217; free rent or reduced security deposits.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also worthwhile to ask for lower rent for a longer-term lease. &#8220;You might not get a discount, but it doesn&#8217;t hurt to ask,&#8221; she said.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/10\/07\/renters-are-most-behind-on-payments-in-these-states.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Dakota has the highest percentage of renters behind on payments, at 26%, according to a new study.
