DuQuesnay, an investment advisor at Ritholtz Wealth Management and member of CNBC&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/advisor-council\/\">Advisor Council<\/a>, used a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/06\/07\/leaving-your-job-heres-what-will-happen-to-that-401k-loan-you-have.html\">401(k) loan<\/a> as a short-term pot of cash for a down payment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107205340\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107205340\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000288950\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/107205333-1678303940140-gettyimages-1167016662-dsc03316.jpeg?v=1678304755&amp;w=750&amp;h=422&amp;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"Financial advisor shares her advice for women to start investing now\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Borrowing against retirement savings served as a bridge loan that duQuesnay plans to pay back after selling her old house. She doesn&#8217;t intend to sell until after moving out and making some repairs. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This may be a good strategy for those whose budget can absorb the monthly mortgage and 401(k) loan payments, she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Pros and cons of a 401(k) loan<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Federal law lets workers borrow up to half of their 401(k) balance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/06\/04\/heres-what-happens-to-your-401k-loan-if-you-are-laid-off.html\">capped at $50,000<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>People should generally try to avoid borrowing from retirement savings if they can, though, duQuesnay cautioned.<\/p>\n<p>When taking any kind of loan, it&#8217;s generally wise to do so to buy &#8220;good&#8221; assets \u2014 those, like a home, that are expected to appreciate in value over time, duQuesnay said. Conversely, an auto loan is an example of debt for a &#8220;bad&#8221; asset since cars depreciate over time. Home equity is also generally people&#8217;s largest store of wealth in retirement, she added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-relatedContent\" id=\"SpecialReportArticle-RelatedContent-1\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-container\">\n<div class=\"RelatedContent-nonCollapsibleContent\">\n<h2 class=\"RelatedContent-header\">More from Ask an Advisor<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p><em>Here are more FA Council perspectives on how to navigate this economy while building wealth.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Retirement savers shouldn&#8217;t borrow against their 401(k) to meet their everyday cash-flow needs, which would speak to a broader budgeting problem, she said.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, there are drawbacks to 401(k) loans, duQuesnay said.<\/p>\n<p>For example, you&#8217;re taking that money out of the stock market \u2014 meaning you&#8217;ll miss out on investment earnings during the repayment period, which can generally be up to five years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Even though you&#8217;re paying yourself back with interest, the loan still represents a crunch on monthly cash flow. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Further, if you&#8217;re laid off or find a new job, most employers will require your outstanding balance be repaid shortly after termination.
