{"id":8383,"date":"2023-07-24T18:40:11","date_gmt":"2023-07-24T18:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/imsfund.com\/?p=8383"},"modified":"2023-07-24T18:40:11","modified_gmt":"2023-07-24T18:40:11","slug":"10-years-of-rally-in-u-s-house-prices-could-end-says-robert-shiller","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/imsfund.com\/index.php\/2023\/07\/24\/10-years-of-rally-in-u-s-house-prices-could-end-says-robert-shiller\/","title":{"rendered":"10 years of rally in U.S. house prices could end, says Robert Shiller"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-107275293\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;The fear of interest rate increases has influenced people&#8217;s thinking \u2014 it&#8217;s not just the homeowners, it&#8217;s new buyers who wanted to get in before the interest rates went up even more,&#8221; says Robert Shiller, professor of economics at Yale University.<\/p>\n<p>Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>A decade-long rally in U.S. home prices could finally come to an end once the Federal Reserve stops its rate-hiking cycle, said Robert Shiller, professor of economics at Yale University.<\/p>\n<p>Home prices have made <a href=\"https:\/\/fred.stlouisfed.org\/series\/CSUSHPINSA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">steady gains since 2012<\/a>, according to the S&amp;P CoreLogic Case-Shiller U.S. National Home Price Index.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The fear of interest rate increases has influenced people&#8217;s thinking \u2014 it&#8217;s not just the homeowners, it&#8217;s new buyers who wanted to get in before the interest rates went up even more,&#8221; Shiller recently told CNBC&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/asia-squawk-box\/\">Squawk Box Asia<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They wanted to lock in. So that&#8217;s been a positive influence on the market. But it&#8217;s coming to an end,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p>Shiller noted that the index reflected &#8220;unusual behavior&#8221; in the last six months, saying prices &#8220;seemed to be fine and then it started to go up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107274011\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107274011\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000308754\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/107274012-16898270801689827077-30380423935-1080pnbcnews.jpg?v=1689835127&amp;w=750&amp;h=422&amp;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"Robert Shiller says more than a decade of steady gains in US house prices may be coming to an end\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>U.S. home prices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/07\/10\/home-prices-hit-new-highs-driven-by-tighter-supply.html\">notched a record high in May<\/a>, rising 0.7% nationally from April at a seasonally adjusted rate, according to data from another benchmark, the Black Knight Home Price Index.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think &#8230; people don&#8217;t know what to make of the &#8216;what is the Fed going to do?&#8217; situation,&#8221; Shiller said.<\/p>\n<p>The Fed indicated during its<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/06\/14\/fed-rate-decision-june-2023.html\"> June meeting<\/a>\u00a0that further tightening is likely, but at a slower pace than the rate increases that characterized monetary policy since early 2022.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen a dramatic increase in interest rates since a couple of years ago. And I think there&#8217;s a sense that that&#8217;s enough,&#8221; the professor said, adding that a soft landing is a possibility, though it&#8217;s unlikely to be a &#8220;perfect&#8221; one.<\/p>\n<p>Shiller added, however, that he&#8217;s &#8220;not panicking,&#8221; saying part of the recent spike in home prices is &#8220;just seasonal,&#8221; noting that prices typically go up in the summer.<\/p>\n<p>The Fed is scheduled to meet this week and announce a rate decision Wednesday. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/us\/feds-last-rate-hike-coming-july-meeting-economists-say-2023-07-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Economists polled by Reuters<\/a> forecast an interest rate hike of 25 basis points.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/07\/24\/10-years-of-rally-in-us-house-prices-could-end-says-robert-shiller.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;The fear of interest rate increases has influenced people&#8217;s thinking \u2014 it&#8217;s not just the homeowners, it&#8217;s new buyers who wanted to get in before the interest rates went up even more,&#8221; says Robert Shiller, professor of economics at Yale University.
