What that means for you"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-6\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-6-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Credit card rates top 20%<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Most\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2016\/08\/01\/credit-cards-gaining-steam-again.html\">credit cards<\/a>\u00a0come with a variable rate, which has<strong> <\/strong>a direct connection to the Fed&#8217;s benchmark rate.<\/p>\n<p>After the previous rate hikes, the average credit card rate is now more than 20% \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/04\/27\/this-is-how-inflation-interest-rates-can-impact-your-credit-card-debt.html\">an all-time high<\/a>. Further, with most people feeling strained by higher prices, balances are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/08\/02\/credit-card-balances-jump-13percent-as-inflation-outpaces-wage-growth.html\">higher<\/a>\u00a0and more cardholders are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/01\/10\/americans-lean-heavily-on-credit-cards-amid-inflation.html\">carrying debt from month to month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Even without a rate hike, APRs may continue to rise, according to according to Matt Schulz, chief credit analyst at LendingTree. &#8220;The truth is that today&#8217;s credit card rates are the highest they&#8217;ve been in decades, and they&#8217;re almost certainly going to keep creeping higher in the next few months.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline1\"\/>Mortgage rates are at 8%<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Although 15-year and 30-year mortgage rates are fixed, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/10\/23\/the-10-year-treasury-tops-5percent-again-heres-what-that-means-for-you.html\">tied to Treasury yields<\/a> and the economy, anyone shopping for a new home has lost considerable purchasing power, partly because of inflation and the Fed&#8217;s policy moves.<\/p>\n<p>The average rate for a 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage is up to 8%, the highest in 23 years, according to Bankrate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107314233\">\n<div role=\"button\" tabindex=\"0\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107314233\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000318402\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/image.cnbcfm.com\/api\/v1\/image\/107314249-3ED4-WEX-101023-Deritis.jpg?v=1696935622&amp;w=750&amp;h=422&amp;vtcrop=y\" alt=\"There are still many reasons for mortgage rates to climb upward, says Moody's\"\/><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"\/><span\/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;Rates have risen two full percentage points in 2023 alone,&#8221; said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac&#8217;s chief economist. &#8220;Purchase activity has slowed to a virtual standstill, affordability remains a significant hurdle for many and the only way to address it is lower rates and greater inventory.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/04\/29\/how-to-know-if-the-popular-adjustable-rate-mortgage-is-right-for-you.html\">Adjustable-rate mortgages<\/a>, or ARMs,\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2016\/02\/22\/owners-clueless-about-home-equity-study.html\">home equity lines of credit<\/a>, or HELOCs,\u00a0are pegged to the prime rate. As the federal funds rate rose, the prime rate did too, and these rates followed suit.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the average rate for a HELOC is near 9%, the highest in over 20 years, according to Bankrate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline2\"\/>Auto loan rates top 7%<\/h2>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline3\"\/>Federal student loans are now at 5.5%<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2016\/11\/10\/how-you-could-save-under-trumps-student-loan-repayment-plan.html\">Federal student loan rates<\/a>\u00a0are also fixed, so most borrowers aren&#8217;t immediately affected by the Fed&#8217;s moves.\u00a0But undergraduate students who take out new direct federal student loans are now paying 5.50% \u2014 up from 4.99% in the 2022-23 academic year and 3.73% in 2021-22.<\/p>\n<p>For those with existing debt,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/09\/01\/student-loan-interest-resumes-today.html\">interest is now accruing again<\/a>, putting an end to the pandemic-era pause on the bills that had been in effect\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/03\/13\/mnuchin-may-suspend-student-loan-repayments-amid-coronavirus-outbreak.html\">since March 2020<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So far, the transition back to payments is proving <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/10\/22\/student-loan-borrowers-restart-bills-in-a-very-messy-system.html\">painful for many borrowers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>Private student loans tend to have a variable rate tied to the prime, Treasury bill or another rate index, which means those borrowers are already paying more in interest. How much more, however, varies with the benchmark.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"ArticleBody-subtitle\"><a id=\"headline4\"\/>Deposit rates at some banks are up to 5%<\/h2>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;Borrowers are being squeezed but the flipside is that savers are benefiting,&#8221; said Greg McBride, chief financial analyst at Bankrate.com.<\/p>\n<p>While the Fed has no\u00a0direct influence\u00a0on deposit rates, the yields tend to be correlated to changes in the target federal funds rate. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdic.gov\/regulations\/resources\/rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">savings account rates at some of the largest retail banks<\/a>, which\u00a0were near rock bottom\u00a0during most of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/coronavirus\/\">the Covid pandemic<\/a>, are currently up to 0.46%, on average, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.<\/p>\n<p>However, top-yielding online savings account rates are now paying over 5%, according to Bankrate, which is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/04\/03\/3-ways-to-make-sure-youre-earning-competitive-interest-on-your-cash.html\">most savers have been able to earn<\/a>\u00a0in nearly two decades.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Moving your money to a high-yield savings account is the easiest money you are ever going to make,&#8221; McBride said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/CNBC?sub_confirmation=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Subscribe to CNBC on YouTube.<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/10\/27\/federal-reserve-may-not-hike-interest-rates-what-that-means-for-you.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Credit card rates top 20% Most\u00a0credit cards\u00a0come with a variable rate, which has a direct connection to the Fed&#8217;s benchmark rate.
