Ever wonder how you can connect with new people at a networking event without making it awkward? Lean into it.

I’ll provide more context to highlight the outcome.

I recently attended IAB Podcast Upfronts here in New York City. While I was wandering around pretending like I had somewhere to go, I noticed two guys who looked friendly enough to approach. Then, I used my go-to approach for new people at events like this.

I walked over and said “I’m just going to awkwardly insert myself in this conversation”. Fortunately, they were very receptive, and that’s how I met Gary Coichy.

With two decades of experience on both the agency and brand side, Gary decided to establish Pod Digital Media (PDM), a leading podcast agency that stands out as the first Multicultural Podcast agency network, providing advertisers with access to the diverse multicultural audience segment within the podcast ecosystem.

I followed up with Gary after the event to learn more about how he built PDM, his predictions for the future of the podcast industry and insights he could share with other entrepreneurs.

Leadership

During our chat Gary emphasized the pioneering role PDM played in recognizing and monetizing podcasts by underrepresented groups like African Americans, Hispanics, and the LGBTQ community.

Early on he discovered partnering with overlooked audiences could position his company as an industry leader and create new opportunities for growth and influence.

Historically, if you don’t have a big audience it’s challenging if not impossible to land brand deals. But Gary realized the power of creating a centralized network of podcast hosts, combining their reach, and then selling packages to advertisers that include placement on several different podcasts.

This proved to be advantageous for brands as it increased their reach network of hosts. For example, instead of just getting 1,000 ad impressions on one podcast, they could get 20,000 ad impressions on twenty separate podcasts without negotiating several agreements.

As Gary shared “We were the first company in 2017, to basically identify the value of partnering with a podcast host of color. At the time there wasn’t one centralized location for advertisers to tap into their audiences so this was a huge unlock.”

His leadership strategy involved seeing potential where larger networks saw limitations due to scale and financial viability. And Gary’s first big break came from landing HBO as a client in 2019.

Today, PDM’s network consists of top ranked podcasts including The Kenny Burns Show, Behind The Mask, Black Girl Texting and Social Proof.

Innovation

PDM continued to grow but Gary knew it was important to proactively evolve.. He shared a thought that came to mind which sparked their next phase.

“What other ways can you diversify your offering to ensure that your advertisers can get more than just an ad read or do an ad 30 seconds ad placement on a podcast to still reach that audience authentically?”

Gary provides more details. “We take podcasters on the road around key cultural moments like Art Basel, the Super Bowl and Fashion Week; all while having a fully immersed brand experience that leads to meaningful conversations.”

For example, Yelp has a podcast called Behind the Review that features conversations with reviewers and business owners about their experiences—whether it was one star or five stars—giving listeners behind-the-scenes insights into what was really going on.

When asked about the impact AI will have on the podcast industry, Gary offered shared good news for anyone concerned about being edged out: “I don’t necessarily see AI complete takeover within the next two years. However, I do see playing a bigger role, as far as the A/B testing, and different ads that may be working that may be resonating, not resonating as driving revenue.”

On the plane, I’m that guy sitting next to you who asks 100 questions before we touch down. “Chuck, would you please leave those folks alone?” my wife always says, to no avail.

You see, I just can’t help myself. I care about people and take an interest in them, a philosophy I’ve applied to growing a business.

I’m a scientist by training and the former CEO of a publicly traded tech company with over 26,000 employees. But I need to share something: I truly believe that for any leader, the true driver of success isn’t necessarily technical expertise or management savvy. It’s love and care. Ultimately, that’s what enables their people to navigate challenges and take risks. It also stops amazing talent from walking out the door.

What I’m talking about when I talk about love

I love each and every one of my people. It’s a strong word to throw around in business, I know. There are obviously many types of love, so let me explain what I mean in this context.

I’m talking about the kind of selflessness I saw growing up in modest circumstances in Providence, Rhode Island. My family and friends had limited resources but infinite generosity. They didn’t think twice about sharing whatever they had and finding ways to be of service to others.

Being loved like that shaped who I am today. We always hear about the self-made person, but that’s a myth. No matter how successful they become, everyone needs others to uplift them.

The love I share with employees also comes from my faith. Regardless of what your background may be, all faiths share a notion of love at their core. It’s a deep appreciation and empathy for people’s challenges, along with a willingness to extend a bond to them. Think of it like the strong chemical bond that holds atoms together. By taking that step, I make myself part of someone else’s life and make them part of mine.

It’s often overlooked by business leaders, but the affinity that results is a competitive advantage. Here’s what I’ve learned about how to lead with love, both on a personal and a global level.

To show your people love, get personal

On an individual level, conveying love isn’t rocket science. I simply show people that I care.

How? I ask questions. I listen. I empathize. By putting myself in someone else’s shoes, I start to understand what they’re all about. I like to get to the essence of how they feel, think and dream and find out what keeps them up at night.

People know when their boss cares, and they respond accordingly. Less than 10% of mid- and senior-level leaders are superior listeners and communicators, one employee survey found. However, nine out of 10 highly engaged employees feel heard, versus only a third of those with low engagement levels.

It doesn’t matter who that person is or what they do. I travel a lot for work, so I often chat with the Uber drivers who pick me up at the airport. That isn’t polite small talk—I’m truly interested in hearing about their lives and what makes them tick.

The same goes for the leaders of a company we’re merging with. Having led 20 successful acquisitions, I can’t think of a better integration strategy than to bond with the folks who are joining us.

For me, showing love also means challenging team members because I care about their growth. This may seem counterintuitive, but in my mind, truly loving someone means that you’re there to both push them to new heights and catch them when they fall. Often, people don’t believe they can accomplish something. But if you encourage them to dream bigger and support them along the way, they find new courage, competence and confidence.

Harnessing the power of love at scale

For business leaders, the real test is projecting that love to hundreds or thousands of employees.

I wish I had some tricks to share or advice on the power of mass communication. Listen, I didn’t even have a social media account until earlier this year. And in many cases, I don’t even speak the same language as the people I lead.

Both of those things have made it tough for me to communicate, for instance, with our employees who work in China, where everyone uses WeChat.

But if you love your people, there’s no substitute for meeting them where they are. That’s why I’ve made more than 150 trips to China. To reassure the team there during Covid, I visited our offices all over the country, giving a similar speech everywhere I went. Showing up in person — and delivering a consistent message — helped build a foundation of trust.

I do the same for our other employees scattered across the globe. Over the years, I’ve stopped by many of our locations. After every visit, I hate to leave because it feels like I’m parting with family.

Having a clear value system is another way to convey love at scale. Some people dismiss company values as bland buzzwords, but I disagree. In fact, I supported the development of our “I CARE” values: integrity, collaboration, accountability, respect and enthusiasm. There’s no doubt what we stand for — and as far as I can tell, few people in the company have trouble remembering that acronym.

Leading with love also means embracing the idea that you’re a servant to your people. To show my team that I’m here to serve, I get out and interact with them rather than hiding behind a desk in a corner office.

For any business, taking that approach has its rewards. Servant leadership boosts employee engagement by building trust, research shows. In turn, the most engaged employees perform 20% better and are almost 90% less likely to quit.

How love puts people at the center of the business

When you lead with the kind of love I’ve been talking about, something beautiful happens.

To explain, I’ll invoke one of the two major forces in the universe. (I am a scientist, after all.) Centripetal force keeps an object moving in a circle by seeking the center. Think of the earth’s gravitational pull, which holds the moon in orbit. Love acts as that centripetal force in any organization. It enables everyone to feel centered — drawn together and protected by the team around them.

That’s a great source of courage. As people juggle their work and family lives, they find it easier to handle day-to-day challenges. A workplace infused with love is also a safe environment for experimentation and risk-taking. Knowing that within reason, they don’t have to worry about making mistakes, people can fail fast and share the lessons learned.

Ultimately, for companies, the bond I call love is a trade secret no competitor can copy. It creates a culture that draws people in, making the business a magnet for talent.

In today’s job market, that’s a big plus. Almost nine of out 10 industry execs say that recruiting and retaining talent are major obstacles.

For leaders, demonstrating love is the most powerful way I know to build a strong, caring business. By going where their people are, mentally as well as physically, they can make real connections. Which reminds me — I have a flight to catch.

“Rocky” star Sylvester Stallone’s highly anticipated collection of rare and vintage watches went up for auction this week, and the 11-piece collection sold for $6.7 million — beating original pre-sale estimates.

One timepiece, the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime, broke the record for the most expensive modern watch ever sold through Sotheby’s after it garnered an offer of $5.4 million. It was originally estimated to sell for between $2.5 million and $5 million.

“The sale of the Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime was an unrepeatable celebration, not only of a masterpiece by the most revered Swiss watchmakers of technical excellence but also of the legendary icon that is Sylvester Stallone, who has been a deeply influential and admired collector for many decades,” Geoff Hess, Sotheby’s head of watches, Americas, said in a statement.

In a video posted to Instagram, five hopefuls can be seen going to bat for the watches in a bidding war that lasted nearly four minutes in front of over 100 attendees.

The watch was eventually won by a private, anonymous collector based in Asia.

“I’ve had the privilege of owning some truly remarkable watches over the years, each with its own unique character and history,” Stallone said in a statement last month, ahead of this week’s auction, per GQ. “I enjoy the collecting process like so many others in this passionate community, who don’t just see watches as an accessory, but admire them for their history, craftsmanship, artistry—but most importantly—how they make them feel.”

Want to Get The Most Out of AI? Start Treating AI Like Your Human Employees

Our new AI tools and copilots have made some royal blunders. They’ve doled out bad advice with supreme confidence, they’ve gotten talked into shady deals, they’ve made things weird and turned incredibly rude. Slip-ups are rare, of course, but when they happen the internet goes to town. We love to dismiss a wayward AI.

But that’s a huge mistake.

The impulse is, in part, a result of being threatened by AI. But I think it also exposes a profound misunderstanding: We still think of AI agents as machines that aren’t capable of real growth and improvement the way that human employees are. So, we mock their mistakes — and point out their faults as though they were Roombas trapped in a corner.

In truth, however, we’ve reached a major inflection point. Today’s AI agents aren’t static. They can grow and learn if we take the time to coach them. What’s more, every company already has the power to coach AI agents themselves.

You don’t need a PhD in machine learning. In fact, I’ve met hundreds of AI agent managers who’ve never written a line of code. What they do know is how people work and how humans are managed best. And they understand that those principles now apply to AI agents, too.

The golden rule of managing people (and AI)

The best managers know that human error is a constant, necessary part of human learning. For an employee to truly realize their potential, they need to be given the freedom to push boundaries, experiment and even fail. Expecting a new employee to never falter isn’t simply unrealistic — it’s also unproductive. Great managers know that messing up and growth go hand in hand.

Meanwhile, exceptional managers know that it isn’t always the employee who needs to be corrected, either. It’s often the manager’s method of onboarding, training or providing feedback that needs adjustment. Large companies lose tens of millions of dollars because employees misunderstand policies or processes. However, high-performing managers don’t automatically point the finger; instead, they use those errors as a jumping-off point for introspection and improvement.

The same principles now apply when working with AI agents. They don’t arrive as finished products. Rather (just like humans), they need onboarding and a chance to learn about their new jobs. They need feedback. They need mentoring. In short, managers are discovering that AI agents need the same kind of grace that is already given to human employees.

Seizing on AI’s “teachable moments”

Say you work at a bank and you’re onboarding an AI customer service agent. You’ve uploaded to the agent every document that your human employees use to learn about company policy and procedures (those were read and digested in moments.) Company blogs and changing product details can all be tapped into the AI, too, by simply providing relevant URLs.

Then, once the AI agent is ready to start working with customers, it finally has a chance to make its first mistake. And you have a chance to make it better.

An explanation about how to open a new checking account, for instance, might be too long-winded for customers looking for a quick answer. This isn’t a fatal flaw. It’s a teachable moment. Giving direct feedback — “shorter responses, please” — translates to instant, visible improvement.

Every reaction from the agent can be shaped and crafted, with benefits that add up quickly over time. I’ve seen managers who invest time in coaching their AI employees turn an eager “intern” into a seasoned pro in a matter of months.

The real perspective shift here comes down to recognizing these agents for what they are: Fallible but eager employees, raring to learn if we give them a chance.

What’s gained by coaching AI past its mistakes

The benefits of this mind shift are manifold. In customer service, the enormous amount of time and money spent training human agents typically leads to limited returns. Industry-wide, we lose nearly half of those hires every year. It’s a sieve, with company resources flowing down the drain.

By contrast, AI agents aren’t going anywhere. Every ounce of effort poured into an AI agent’s training goes on producing returns in perpetuity. What’s more, those returns rapidly scale — a VP at Wealthsimple, a leading online investment platform, recently estimated that her AI Agent delivered the productivity of ten full-time human agents. That, by the way, allows those humans to focus on concierge experiences that are more complex and still require the human touch.

We already know that the quality management of humans is directly correlated to a higher market cap. Quality management of AI agents promises an even more positive effect. AI agents never forget and never leave, allowing management efforts to be scaled and shared.

But the upside extends beyond capable AI agents. Because AI needs human management and feedback in order to succeed, it doesn’t end up just taking jobs — but creating new, and often better, ones. I’ve seen how frontline customer service workers have taken on roles managing AI, giving them a renewed sense of ownership in the company.

Indeed, managers who learn to coach AI agents are making themselves indispensable. They’ve learned to use a tool that can boost productivity in every other department in their company.

A future where we’re all managers

Nor is this change limited to a select few roles. From here on out, just about everybody is going to be an AI manager. We’ll all have AI agents working for us, upping our productivity. And that means this mind-shift I’m describing — thinking about AI agents as teachable, ever-evolving co-workers — will be discussed far beyond the C-suite.

As a new paradigm sets in, agents will become precisely as intelligent as we, collectively, bother to make them.

And I’ve had customers that have been with me [for a long time]. I’ve seen their kids from babies to now driving cars to now having families. So it’s a generational thing.”
